Job Description

The Newburgh Enlarged City School District has a vacancy for a Transportation Coordinator for the District.

 A Civil Service Exam will be required.  This is a provisional appointment.

Job Qualifications

 General Statement of Duties:

Coordinates the school bus program serving in a liaison capacity between the school district and private bus companies providing transportation for the school system; does related work as required.

 

Distinguishing Features of the Class

This is an important administrative position involving responsibility for representing the school system in negotiations with the private companies providing the transportation for the school district. The work is performed under general supervision allowing considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgement. Supervision may be exercised over clerical assistants.

 

Examples of Work: (illustrative only)

  • Prepares specifications for transportation contracts.
  • Confers with contractors to establish routes and time schedules.
  • Receives and attempts to settle grievances of parents, pupils, schools and contractors.
  • Establishes and maintains lists for students eligible for transportation.
  • Arranges all special trips, including those of athletic teams.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of State transportation reports.
  • Maintains records of receipts and expenditures and makes out periodic reports of number of pupils carried.
  • Analyzes costs involving transportation.
  • Assists in the preparation of the transportation budget.
  • Consults with representatives of private and parochial schools concerning school bus schedules.
  • Advises Superintendent of Schools of hazardous driving conditions and recommends closing of schools.

 

Required Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of standard bus transportation methods; good knowledge of the geography of the district; good knowledge of the New York State Motor Vehicle Law and applicable regulations of the public service commission;  good knowledge of driving safety practices;  ability to plan and supervise the work of others;  ability to prepare records and reports;  dependability;  initiative and resourcefulness; good physical condition.

 

Acceptable Experience and Training

Graduation from high school and four years of experience in administering a school district or government agency transportation program.
